Blue Meanies from Outer Space - Enhanced Vic 20
A downloadable game
Blue Meanies from Outer Space by Duane Later was released in 1981 by Commodore.
Duane was briefly a part of the Vic Commando's who helped bring the Vic 20 to the west.
Blue Meanies from Outer Space is a fun and unusual game but does have some flaws and frustrations. This version has been enhanced and improved.
New features and changes:
- The keyboard controls have been updated to a more comfortable layout:
- Fire lasers on the left with keys Q, A and Z
- Fire lasers on the right with keys O, K and M
- Move the repair ship with keys T, F, G and H
- Repair a block with the SPACE BAR
- The keys to operate the lasers are displayed on screen
The repair ship can also be controlled with the joystick (for easier two player action).Temporarily remove due to memory issue- The repair ship uses less energy.
- When out of energy there is a higher chance of refuel ship appearing.
- Bug fix for Meanie number 2.
- Some minor optimisations.
This version has been updated to fix a corruption to the end of the BASIC program. The joystick control has been removed for now.
Instructions
Defend your base from the invading Blue Meanies. They are intent on your destruction and if they get to the reactors it is game over!
You have six lasers to protect your reactors. Press keys Q, A and Z or O, K and M to activate them when a Meanie is in their sights.
You also have a repair ship to rebuild damaged parts of your base. Use keys T, F, G and H to move it and the SPACE BAR to repair a block.
Firing lasers and using the repair ship will use up valuable energy. The Meanies will also zap energy when they collide with your base. A supply ship will appear every so often to restore some energy, be careful not to shoot it!
If you can defeat 20 Meanies they will get harder. Can you beat the high score of 800 points? Good luck commander!
More by Duane Later
If you had a Vic 20 back in the 80's you may have typed in the games Duane wrote to be found in the back of the manual. Killer Comet was my favourite of those listings.

Install instructions
Download and extract the two TAP (tape) files from the archive. One is the original game and the other is the enhanced version.
Load these into an emulator such as VICE (can drag and drop the tap files onto the window) to load them. An unexpanded Vic 20 is required.
Alternatively, the tap files can be used on a real Vic 20 with devices such as a Tapuino, or converted to an audio file and recorded back to a cassette tape with the appropriate tools.
